External Course Approval

PhD students must have prior approval to register for a course outside of the Mathematics Department. External courses must support the student’s research goals.

Note: an email of support from the student’s advisor is required.

Rolling Basis

D-clearance and Prerequisite Waiver Requests

Some courses require Departmental Authorization or Clearance before students can register in the class. Students might also be blocked from registering in a course that lists prerequisites they did not complete at USC. Students can submit requests for D-clearance or prerequisite waivers via this form.

Transfer Credits

Per USC policy: Only graduate level courses taken in pursuit of a graduate degree are eligible to be transferred.

Student may request to transfer credits only after completing all written exams.

Departmental Awards

Due 4 weeks prior to travel

Apply for a Travel Award

These awards support travel to workshops, conferences, and seminars for any Mathematics PhD student in good standing.

Note: an email of support from your advisor is also required.

Due annually by 2/28 and 9/30

Apply for a Computer Award

This one-time Computer Award is available to every PhD student who has successfully completed all three of their written exams. These awards are offered twice a year, in September and February.

If you have been nominated for a Research or Teaching Excellence Award, please use this form to upload your CV along with a Research or Teaching statement.

Fall Graduate Exams

Students should register in advance for the written graduate exams. Fall exams are held in August from Monday to Wednesday in the week prior to the start of the Fall semester.

Spring Graduate Exams

Students should register in advance for the written graduate exams. Spring exams are held in January from Wednesday to Friday in the week prior to the start of the Spring semester.

Due 4 weeks prior to exam

Oral Exam (PhD students only)

Students should submit the names of their exam committee at least 4 weeks prior to the exam date to ensure all necessary approvals are obtained in time.

Office Preference

Each summer, we ask students to clean, clear, and vacate their offices to allow for our new cohort of PhD students. Please indicate your office and officemate preferences annually on this form.

Request additional year of TA support

PhD students are promised support for five year. To be considered for financial support beyond your 5th year, you MUST have completed all program requirements except the dissertation and worked with your advisor to develop a dissertation completion plan (with expected completion date).

SLMath Summer Graduate Schools

Every summer, SLMath organizes several summer graduate schools (usually two weeks each), some of which are held at SLMath and others at partner institutions around the world. Attending one of these schools can be a very motivating and exciting experience for a student.
