Please email the instructor of record with a “cc” to aseinfo@usc.edu to request D-clearance.

Here is when D clearance is often needed and how to request permission to register:

PRE-REGISTRATION AND BEFORE THE START OF THE SEMESTER

During pre-registration, if a class requires “D” Clearance, chances are the class is full, or the GE Office is controlling enrollment. They release seats a few at a time while students are enrolling during orientations.  We have no control over this process and encourage students to check online regularly to see when seats have become available. They publish the dates each semester, and you can obtain information on their process here: the https://dornsife.usc.edu/ge/registration/

Once a course has filled during pre-registration, and during the regular registration period, including drop and add, we add the “D” to a course to allow the instructor to control their course enrollment. When they wish to add a student, they notify the ASE advisors and permission to register is granted on the USC Student Information System. Permission to register cannot be granted without instructor approval.

FIRST DAY OF CLASSES AND DROP & ADD PERIOD (First three weeks of the semester)

Once a course has filled during pre-registration, and during the regular registration period, including drop and add, we add the “D” to a course to allow the instructor to control their course enrollment. ASE advisors are unable to enter D clearance (permission to register) without the instructor’s approval. Please attend class and/or reach out to the professor to request D clearance for their lecture (and discussion section if required) for the class you wish to add.

You must attend the first session of each course, or you may be replaced by a student on the waiting list, even if you are registered. If you do not register for a class for which you have D-clearance by the registration deadline, your D-clearance will expire. All American Studies and Ethnicity “R” courses change to “D” after the start of the semester and require instructor approval sent to the ASE Advisors. Questions on D class assignments for undergraduate and graduate courses can be emailed to aseinfo@usc.edu with student ID, section number(s), current major, and class year/standing. Please note advisors cannot enter D clearance without instructor approval.

Thank you for your interest in taking a course in American Studies and Ethnicity

CENTER FOR ACADEMIC SUPPORT

The Center for Academic Support, located in STU 301, is the central resource and referral agency for learning enrichment at USC. Upper-division students, graduate students, faculty, staff, and volunteers at USC coordinate a program of mentoring and academic enrichment in a university-wide effort to address student needs.

OFFICE OF COLLEGE ADVISEMENT

Undergraduate advisement at USC offers terrific resources that can help students make the most out of their undergraduate education. Every student on campus has a staff or faculty advisor who is available to answer any questions that come up during his or her academic career at USC.

Most students will meet with their academic advisor every semester prior to registration to discuss course selection. Still, students are encouraged to see an advisor more often than once a semester to discuss opportunities and resources at USC.

WRITING CENTER

The Writing Center is the USC Writing Program’s consulting service to the whole university, providing one-to-one consultations and small-group workshops to help students — of all abilities — to improve their critical thinking and writing skills.
