Ever since I started learning German in 7th grade, I have had the dream of living in Germany and finally being able to utilize my many years of practice in the language. I chose IES Abroad in Berlin because I thought that living in the capital would allow me to experience the full range of experiences that Germany has to offer. After completing my program, I am happy to say that it met and actually exceeded my expectations!

How did your housing situation enhance your study abroad experience?

I lived in a student apartment building with a lot of people that were in my cohort of the program. By having most of our classes together along with living together, I felt I was able to easily grow close to my classmates. I also had my own apartment, which was one of my favorite parts of my time!

Could you share any experiences where your identity played a role in your time abroad?

Luckily, Berlin is known as one of the LGBTQ+ hubs of Europe. Due to this, I was able to experience the culture in full force. Along with my friends, we were able to visit a plethora of LGBTQ+ institutions, such as clubs, bars, and gyms. Along with my LGBTQ+ identity, I am also of Hispanic descent. While I did experience some light hazing every once in a while, I did not feel unsafe in any way during my time in Berlin.

Did you receive a scholarship that helped you study abroad? If so, what scholarship, and how did it help?

I received the Hovel Scholarship which covered a large portion of my tuition! I highly recommend applying to this scholarship, as it helped me immensely.
