Tess Kelly – University of Otago

Talk to me about: New Zealand (especially Dunedin!), camping and hiking on the South Island, or how to decide between different locations if you’re torn! It took me a long time to choose, and I’m so glad that I took my time to decide because New Zealand turned out to be the best decision I could have made. I’d love to chat about what it’s like to go abroad alone rather than with friends and how to plan weekend trip itineraries or pack for multiple climates. I can also share tips on the best hikes and adventures in the South Island, plus travel to nearby countries. If you’re nervous about making friends or just want ideas for things to do, I’m happy to share what worked for me. Studying in New Zealand was one of the most rewarding parts of my college experience, and I’d love to help you discover why it might be the perfect fit for you too.

Advice: Follow your heart and try something new, study abroad is all about growth. Don’t be afraid to go alone. Always say yes. Enjoy the everyday. While the big trips were absolutely amazing, some of my favorite memories came from the little moments like walking through the botanical gardens on my way to the grocery store or watching rugby in the backyard with my flatmates. Study abroad goes by so quickly, so soak up both the big adventures and the small routines that make your host country feel like home.
