Natalie Bakken – University of Melbourne

Talk to me about: literally anything! From housing and where to buy groceries, to how many suitcases are too many and how to rent a car in a different country. I went into study abroad without knowing anyone, so I understand how scary it can be to navigate things alone. Ask me about travel itineraries, how to make friends, and choosing classes. No question is a dumb question, so don’t be afraid to reach out!

Advice: take advantage of every opportunity (of course), but be okay with the idea that you might not get to do everything on your list. You’ll meet people/see people on social media that make it to countries that you don’t make it to, have experiences that you don’t. Remember that studying abroad AT ALL is an incredible opportunity. Don’t forget about the cool local things to do. And don’t discount the importance of routine. It can keep you grounded when homesickness kicks in. Yes, I skydived in New Zealand, but I also made time to call my family, do yoga, and journal every day. Also that: JOURNAL EVERY DAY.
