Charlotte Calmès at Sciences Po
Program: Sciences Po
Term: Spring 2025
Majors: International Relations and Journalism
I chose to study abroad because I have always had a passion for travel and was eager to experience living and learning long-term in another country. Although I’m originally from France, I haven’t lived there since childhood, so returning offered an opportunity to reconnect with my family abroad and explore the country more deeply. Academically, Sciences Po is a standout institution in Europe for studying international politics, and I was eager to gain new perspectives on global affairs beyond the American lens. My studies at Sciences Po provided valuable insight into contemporary international dynamics and the historical forces that have shaped today’s world, all while allowing me to build lasting friendships with peers from around the globe and explore new regions firsthand.

Sciences Po does not offer student housing, so students are responsible for finding their own accommodations. While living alone made it a bit more challenging to meet people compared to USC, where I was used to having roommates and being constantly surrounded by fellow students, living on my own pushed me to put myself out there, take initiative in building friendships and be more intentional about making plans. This experience gave me a stronger sense of independence and self-reliance, preparing me for life after college. Having my own space also allowed me to host so many of my friends and family members throughout the semester, which was a major plus!
My advice for future students considering studying at Sciences Po is to just go for it! It may feel a bit intimidating at first to be in a program without many other USC students, but that’s exactly what makes the experience so rewarding. I learned so much and was exposed to new kinds of people and perspectives I never would have encountered otherwise. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there—say yes to invitations, make the first move to start conversations and take the lead in planning group outings. Some of the best connections I made came from just taking that initiative. I’d also recommend getting involved in campus life. Join clubs and go to school events, as these are great ways to meet other students. And don’t forget to make the most of your time in the city! Explore beyond the typical tourist spots, as Paris is full of hidden gems. Most importantly, enjoy every minute. It will all be over before you know it!
