Feliz en Español

Feliz En Español is a community outreach program that allows students enrolled in SPAN220 and SPAN240 to collaborate with Los Feliz Charter School for The Arts (LFCSA, http://www.losfelizarts.org). This service-learning program provides students with the opportunity to share their skills and talents with the children of LFCSA, while practicing their Spanish and increasing their awareness of a culturally and socially diverse neighborhood of Los Angeles.

As part of the program, students prepare and teach 45 minute on-site classes at LFCSA (transportation is provided) during the after-school program. Children’s age ranges from 5 to 10 years old. After each visit to LFCSA, students are required to complete 3 written assignments to reflect on their service-learning experience. This program was developed and is directed by Professor Mercedes Fages Agudo (fagesagu@usc.edu).

Spanish Mentoring Brigades

Spanish Mentoring Brigades is a community outreach program that allows students enrolled in SPAN 220 and Span 240 to collaborate with USC Hybrid High School (http://www.uschybridhigh.org/). Students are required to give three on-site presentations (Downtown LA) to 11th and 12th graders on topics related to personal and academic aspects of college education (admission process, class registration, essay writing, club & organization memberships, study abroad) and to complete two written assignments. Professor  Carolina Castillo Larrea (cast137@usc.edu) developed and directs this program.

Volunteering with the Joint Educational Project (JEP)

JEP is a community service project that trains students and sends them into the local schools, community centers, and health clinics. It is an excellent cultural and linguistic experience and will enhance speaking, listening, and writing skills in Spanish.  You can learn more about the JEP program go to https://dornsife.usc.edu/joint-educational-project/
