Talk to me about: Studying abroad as a pre-health student, fears or hold ups over studying abroad, concerns about level of Spanish

Advice: DO IT. Study abroad. Don’t look back. As someone who almost abandoned studying abroad over the fear of whether I was “good enough” at Spanish, I am beyond grateful I didn’t let this concern stop me from embarking on one of the best experiences of my life. While language level is a valid concern, especially in terms of respecting the culture of your host country, doing well in classes, and communicating effectively with your host family, the whole point of studying abroad is to challenge yourself and learn. You are NOT expected to be perfect, and as long as you give an honest effort to speak the language, learn from your mistakes, and respect the culture of your host country throughout your time abroad, you will be rewarded. Sure, there will be some awkward moments and hiccups along the way, but remember that any tough parts of the learning process will be far worth it for the rewards of studying abroad. Not only will you embed yourself in an entirely new culture, but you are also likely to learn so much more about yourself, your priorities, and your aspirations than ever anticipated. Moving to a foreign country for 4-5 months will challenge everything you knew about yourself and the world around you. Studying abroad also brings together students of all different academic and life backgrounds who you may not have gotten the chance to get to know otherwise. You will grow together with people who inspire you and bond over this deeply meaningful and shared experience. So have confidence, get excited, and take advantage of the magical opportunity before you!
