Introduction

Course offerings change, and many departments offer courses that explore narrative but do not appear on our list in the USC Catalogue. Each semester we include these options to be substituted into your major or minor requirements, counting solely during the semester the course is listed.

If you take a substitution course, it will not automatically appear in the correct category on your STARS report. You will need to let your academic advisor know so that they can apply the substitution for you.

The substitutions are grouped by Narrative Studies major categories. The requirement each course meets with the Narrative Structure minor (if any) is listed in parentheses after the course title.

Propose a Substitution

You may find a course at USC that you think you should count toward your major in Narrative Studies (or minor in Narrative Structure) but isn’t already listed as an option.

You can use the Narrative Studies Course Substitution Proposal (found on Undergraduate Forms) to propose the substitution. You’ll need to submit the syllabus, the proposed major or minor category, and an explanation.

Requests should be submitted and reviewed before you enroll in the course.
