Tiara Wilson
Biography
Tiara Wilson is an activist, writer, scholar, and pop culture enthusiast committed to empowering others and transforming communities inside and outside the academy. She is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in East Asian Languages and Cultures at the University of Southern California. Before attending USC, Tiara earned a Bachelor of Arts in International Studies from the University of Denver and studied internationally at Nanjing University in Nanjing, China, and Akita International University in Akita, Japan.

Summary Statement of Research Interests
Tiara’s research focuses on popular culture as a tool for facilitating cross-cultural interactions and the articulation of identity. Her research investigates representations of gender, nationality, and ethnicity in East Asian Popular Culture. In particular, she addresses the use of black culture and blackness as a vehicle for expressing identity in Korean Popular music, anime, and Sinophone hip hop. Her broader research interests include Chinese popular music, Korean popular culture, Afro-Asian connections, critical white studies, and black studies.
