Assel’s research  examines the representation of the steppe in late Soviet Russian and Kazakh literature and  cinema, exploring the intersection of cultural heritage preservation and literary myth-making  during the 1970s-1980s. She is also currently developing a project on the lost voices of the Tatar  avant-garde, investigating 1920s Tatar periodicals and visual culture, supported by the 2025  Edward Guiliano Global Fellowship from the Modern Language Association.
