Psychology at USC

Located in the heart of Los Angeles, the University of Southern California Department of Psychology has among its faculty internationally recognized scholars and one of the most diverse student populations in the United States. Our faculty and students are engaged in groundbreaking studies, investigating basic theoretical questions and bringing their work to bear on some of society's most pressing needs. The department offers graduate training in five areas: Brain & Cognitive Science, Clinical Science, Developmental Psychology, Quantitative Methods and Computational Psychology, and Social Psychology.

 New Student Services Advisor Rika Yano

"I joined USC as an undergraduate academic advisor for the Department of Psychology and the Department of Sociology in January 2023. I’m passionate about providing support to students during their higher education journeys so they can feel confident and prepared by the time they graduate. I’m excited to be a part of the USC family and to witness all the great things our students will accomplish."

Dr. Mark Lai

Dr. Lai is the recipient of the NSF CAREER Scientist Award. 

Sofia Cardenas

Congratulations to Sofia Cardenas on being the International Society for Developmental Psychobiology Sandra G. Wiener Award for 2022. The award recognizes research that is original and significiant. 

Dr. Beam

Congratulations to Dr. Beam on receiving the Fuller and Scott Award from the Behavior Genetics Association. This is the highest award given to a junior member! 

Regina Brodell

Regina Brodell received a prestigious award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) to examine personal identity among youth at risk for gang membership. She also received an award from the APA Minority Fellowship Program to further her clinical training in working with children and families of marginalized communities. 

Jeremy Barajas

Psychology Honors student, Jeremy Barajas won the undergraduate Discovery Scholars Prize for his project entitled Developing a Measure of Truth Discernment Ability Using Pandemic Misinformation that he carried out with Dr. Richard John. 

Esthelle Ewusi Boisvert 

Congratualtions to Esthelle Ewusi Boisvert for being the recipient of the General Education Assistant Award for teaching in the GE Program. 

Dr. Santiago Morales

Congratulations to Dr. Morales on his selection as one of the APS Rising Stars. A prestigious designation presented to researchers in the earliest stages of their research career , and whose innovative work has already advanced the field.

Dr. Chris Beam

Congratulations to Dr. Beam for recieving the Raubenheimer Award for junior faculty this year! 

Alyssa Morris

Congratulations to clinical graduate student Alyssa Morris on being selected as one of the recipients of 2021 APA Dissertation Research Award.

Brynee Evans

Dr. Mohammad Atari

Mohammad Atari who recently completed his PhD with Dr. Morteza Dehghani, will begin a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Comparative Biology and Psychology at Harvard in November.


Dr. Saxbe and Sofia Cardenas

Dr. Saxbe and Sofia have a fascinating Op-Ed article published in the NY Times about Paternity Leave.

Dr. Joe Arvai

Dr. Joe Arvai has been appointed a member of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Science Advisory Board. Joe and other board members will provide advice to EPA leadership to help advance the agency’s mission.

Dr. Wendy Wood

Wendy received the 2021 Career Contribution Award from the Society of Personality and Social Psychology. This is a major senior-level award that reflects a great recognition of the contributions that Wendy made to the field.

Dr. Laura Baker

Dr. Baker was awarded the Dobzhansky Award at the annual meeting of the Behavioral Genetics Association. This is the highest honor bestowed to BGA members for their lifetime contribution to the field.

Dr. Daphna Oyserman

Dr. Oyserman will be awarded the 2021 International Society for Self and Identity Distinguished Lifetime Career Award for Major Enduring Contributions to Understanding Self and Identity.

Mariel Bello

Mariel Bello, current doctoral candidate with the USC Clinical Program was the recipient of the IPAA Dissertation Award.

Dr. David Newman

USC Psychology PhD Graduate Dr. David Newman was the recipient of the IPAA Dissertation Award.

Dr. Jonathan Stange

Dr. Stange was awarded the 2021 Assocation for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (ABCT) Presidents New Researcher Award.

Cindy Chiang

Cindy Chiang, Developmental Psych graduate student, was awarded the NSF Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement Grant (DDRIG) from the Linguistics Program in the Division of Brain and Cognitive Sciences.

Maddy, a graduate student in the Social Psych area, was awarded the Dornsife GE Graduate Assistant of the Year for her work with Dr. Bernstein and Dr. Stephenson.

Esthelle Ewusi Boisvert

Esthelle, a graduate student in the clinical program, was awarded the Doctoral Fellowship from Canada's Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council.
