Hannah Khalil – Maastricht University

Talk to me about: Everything and anything! Studying abroad will truly be one of the most magical experiences you’ll have as a college student.

Ask me about…Maastricht itself! Maastricht was a city I didn’t know too much about before looking into abroad programs, but was ultimately pulled in by the small Dutch city charm. It quickly became my home, allowing a comfortable and cozy place to find myself within the city, while also being comfortable enough to explore the surrounding countries.

Ask me about…travel tips! As someone who grew up in a very urban Southern California setting, the culture shock specifically to a small European city was interesting. There are definitely a few tips I wish I had known.

Ask me about…CES! The CES program is the program you would be placed in, essentially connecting you with other study abroad students. They took us on many trips ranging from Dutch cultural trips to Paris! Feeling right at home in Maastricht, its centreability in Europe allowed for flexible travel to any place you desired.

Although I only mentioned a few things, I am truly an open book for questions about Maastricht, the Netherlands, and Europe in general.

Advice: If you’re feeling anxious about studying abroad, remember that the very fact you’re considering it means you’re ready to take this step. You won’t regret studying abroad—whether in the Netherlands or elsewhere—so embrace every opportunity that comes your way.

Be open to trying new things, but also trust yourself! Learning to be independent in a foreign country can be challenging, but it’s incredibly rewarding. Engage with the local culture—sing silly Dutch songs at Carnival, try local delicacies, and learn to navigate your new home like a local.

Have your chill days, find your favorite grocery stores that you’ll miss when you return home, but also take those spontaneous trips when you find amazing deals on Ryanair. Any place you go will become a second home, and I wish you the best in whatever decision you make.
