Power in the Desert – Film Screening & Discussion

On this Earth Day 2025, a glimmer of hope: the online premiere of a new documentary, “Power in the Desert”, about the promise and pitfalls of extracting lithium in the Atacama Desert of South America and the Imperial Valley of California. Directed by Argentine filmmaker Emiliano Rodriguez Nuesch, the film highlights how these two places are linked, not just by the extraction of the minerals, but by the struggle of grassroots communities to ensure that they too will benefit.

Join Emiliano Rodriguez Nuesch, Chris Benner, Manuel Pastor, and Daniela Flores for an online film screening and a discussion of the themes in their latest book Charging Forward: Lithium Valley, Electric Vehicles, and a Just Future.

Beyond the Chaos: Building Popular Movements in a Time of Uncertainty

Scholars and activists alike have struggled to make sense of and respond to the rapidly unfolding efforts to remake the U.S. state and economy in a more nationalist and anti-democratic mold. Social movements face a central dilemma in this time of uncertainty: they seek to block the worst attacks while building a popular response that is broad and powerful enough to chart a new way forward. On this panel, prominent organizers and researchers explore how social movements are navigating this complex political terrain of our present day and the role of research in documenting and supporting that work.
