The current nexus of climate change policy, land use planning, and public transit investments in California, and Los Angeles in particular, creates an exciting opportunity to establish a nationally-relevant model for urban manufacturing that generates good jobs, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and better aligns with a new vision that calls for more sustainable urban communities.
With funding from the Surdna Foundation, PERE, Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy (LAANE), Green For All, and Goetz Wolff of UCLA Department of Urban Planning are partnering to develop a roadmap for revitalizing and transforming Los Angeles’ manufacturing base to create quality careers for those struggling in poverty, as well as to support a transition to cleaner, more sustainable urban communities.
In coordination with UCLA, PERE is analyzing the manufacturing subsectors where companies currently manufacture – or have the capacity to retool to produce – component parts for rail cars, clean vehicles, and other clean technologies. By developing a typology based on specific opportunities and challenges that local manufacturing firms face in retaining or creating quality jobs, PERE’s research will inform the development of a comprehensive policy agenda.
