Igniting Passion in Marine Education
“The success in the work we do is so very closely tied to the many partners who value and have a passion for the natural world and education, and have the confidence that we can all make an impact in understanding and caring for our ocean planet.” – Linda Chilton, Education Programs Director
May was filled with hands on learning in the classroom and in the field. See what we’ve been up to below!
MESA Weekend Lab on Catalina
We helped guide students from five high schools that are part of the MESA program during a weekend lab on Catalina filled with STEM activities including soil testing, understanding pressure with the hyperbaric chamber, plankton and water quality studies, and building and testing ROVs (remotely ooperated vehicles).
Aquaponics in the Classroom
Students at Liechty Middle School learned to test water quality as part of the Food for Thought Aquaponics partnership (left); and students at the Port of Los Angeles High School who are on aquaculture teams built desktop systems and added plants which are doing quite well!
FLOW Program
6th graders from Foshay Middle School applied their knowledge of ecosystems on a field visit with the Amigos de Bolsa Chica FLOW program to monitor water quality.
LiMPETS & California Naturalist
We helped guide 4th graders and staff at the California Science Center School in LiMPETS monitoring for sand crabs at Leo Carrillo State Beach (left); and we supported Catalina Conservancy by providing the Ocean module for the Catalina California Naturalist training course. In the field we learned how to monitor for water quality, MPA Watch, and rocky shore surveying in preparation for the CA Coast Snapshot.
