Biography

Anthony is a Ph.D candidate in sociology at the University of Southern California.,His dissertation research uses ethnographic, archival, and other qualitative data to examine the role of harm reduction in governing poverty in Los Angeles. This research is especially concerned with how notions of harm reduction are adapted to fit the practices of existing welfare, medical, and penal institutions.

Anthony’s ongoing collaborative projects include: social epidemiological work documenting emerging health risks to people who use drugs, a historical analysis of medicalized poverty governance in Los Angeles, and a comparative study examining how welfare policy regimes shape recipient agency in different sub-national contexts.

His previous work has been published in the American Sociological Review.
