Manuel (Manny) Robles – University of Sussex

Talk to me about: Honestly anything!! Being a first-generation student navigating the whole process from deciding whether or not you want to go abroad, filling out the application, how to budget, how to get involved within a country/culture, balancing work-school life, and how to deal with homesickness.

Advice: If you are thinking about going abroad, I’ll say you should apply! Studying abroad was the best thing I have ever done but at the same time the scariest thing. There might be many worries like the price tag, building friendships, leaving home, etc. However, I can promise you you will have a team of friendly people on your side willing to help you out with each step of the process. Going abroad is a time period where you can be yourself and have a bit of freedom to choose what you want to gain from the experience. Most of the learning abroad is done outside the classroom: talking with the locals, trying new foods, traveling to new places, making new friends, learning how to be a bit more independent, etc. The most important thing to remember is to be patient with yourself and live in the moment!
