Placing nitrifiers in the marine microbial food web
Nitrifiers are the most abundant chemoautotrophic microbes in the mesopelagic and deep oceans, where they use the energy they harness from oxidizing nitrogenous compounds to fix inorganic carbon. Their activities impact global cycles of nitrogen, oxygen and trace metals. In this talk, I will discuss how we are using laboratory experiments with cultured nitrifiers together with field experiments to also understand the role these organisms play in the deep ocean’s carbon cycle.
