Departmental Events
Tea & Treats Hour
Every week the department hosts a social hour for students in the lobby of SOS with tea and treats. It is a great way to meet professors and other majors. The time changes each semester so keep an eye out for announcements about the time or email Prof. O’Neill (ljoneill@usc.edu).
Celebration of History
While most of us in the history department celebrate history on a daily basis, once a year the department gets together to celebrate it together. Early in the fall semester we invite all of our majors and minors to attend a reception and dinner where they will meet other members of the department and hear about the research of one of their professors.
History Honors Day
At the end of the spring semester we gather to honor the students who have excelled in their historical studies. You will get to hear the students who completed Honors Theses give short presentations on their projects and find out who won the Best Undergraduate Paper Award and the Best Honors Thesis Award. If you are interested in writing an honors thesis yourself it is a great event to attend.
Student Clubs
Clio: Department Student Association
Clio, the USC Van Hunnick History Department’s official student association, is open to students of all majors and disciplines. It is an event-oriented club dedicated to stimulating, sustaining, and promoting interest in history through participation in campus programs and excursions around Los Angeles that highlight members’ diverse areas of interest. Previous events have included movie nights, tours of downtown Los Angeles, Historical Karaoke, and history trivia nights. Such programs have aspired to enrich the undergraduate experience through activities that not only enhance enthusiasm for history but also foster a closer connection between the faculty and student bodies. You can follow them on Instagram at @ClioUSC. For more information please contact Prof. O’Neill (ljoneill@usc.edu).
Phi Alpha Theta: Student Honor Society
Phi Alpha Theta is a national honors society with a local chapter at USC. Clio and PAT are currently being administered together as both organizations develop and expand in the upcoming semesters.
PAT a professional society whose mission is to promote the study of history through the encouragement of research, good teaching, publication and the exchange of learning and ideas among historians. We seek to bring students and teachers together for intellectual and social exchanges, which promote and assist historical research and publication by our members in a variety of ways.
