Why did you decide to do a major in East Asian Area Studies (EAAS)?

I decided to major in East Asian Area Studies because I’ve always wanted to pursue an education centered on Asian cultures and languages. I’ve focused on developing the knowledge and skills needed to pursue a meaningful career grounded in cultural understanding. I hope to help spread awareness while also creating opportunities for people to engage more deeply with East Asian cultures and build stronger cross-cultural connections.

Are there any EAAS related courses or events that have been particularly  memorable?

Some of my most memorable experiences in EAAS have been the undergraduate mixers, which gave me the chance to meet and build friendships with others in the major. I’ve also really enjoyed my courses in Japanese history and literature, Chinese film, and international relations through Japanese foreign policy. Studying Japanese at USC has been especially meaningful, as it allowed me to develop language skills while engaging more deeply with the culture.

Can you tell us about your research focus or interests? Is there any project/internship/work you are currently working on that you would like to share?

My academic interests focus on culture, communication, and how we can better connect across differences. I am currently interning at the USC Pacific Asia Museum, which has given me hands-on experience. Being able to engage with Asian art and culture in a real-world setting has deepened my appreciation for the field and shown me new ways that cultural work can make an impact.

Do you have any advice for incoming students?

For incoming students, I would definitely recommend getting involved in student-run clubs to meet friends and explore fun interests. I participated in the climbing club, Chanoyu Tea Club and intramural sports for great community-building. But what I recommend most highly is studying abroad. I spent a semester at Sophia University in Tokyo, which gave me the chance to immerse myself in the Japanese language and culture. This was a truly life-changing experience for me.

What are your plans after graduation?

After graduation, I am excited to explore opportunities that allow me to continue working in cross-cultural spaces, using my background in East Asian studies and language skills to build connections and meaningful experiences. I am considering career opportunities in fields such as travel, hospitality, marketing and events.
