The Earth Sciences Undergraduate Research Apprenticeship Program (ESRAP) offers small grants to USC students majoring in Geological Sciences (BS) and Earth Sciences (BA) in order to conduct independent research under the direction of a faculty member. Students that have an active minor in Geobiology, Geohazards or Climate Change, Stewardship and Resiliency are also eligible for these funds.
Proposals are to include:
- an ESRAP application form;
- two to four pages of text, including an abstract and references, that describe the project;
- a calendar-based work schedule;
- an endorsement memo from a tenure-track or research faculty member who has agreed to supervise the project.
Proposals are welcome throughout the academic year. Proposals from prior recipients are also welcome for either new or continued projects.
Award amounts are based on the merit of the proposal, for a maximum of $2,500, and may include salary support of the student, field expenses, or lab work not covered by the faculty advisor.
The funding is available during both the academic year and summer. Work-study hours can be applied to extend your project.
Proposals are submitted to the Department of Earth Sciences Student Review Committee. Acceptance of the award is with the understanding that a final report will be submitted to the supervisor upon the completion of the research and that the research will be presented during the Spring Semester at the annual Undergraduate Research Symposium sponsored by the Provost.
