Undergraduate Lab Incidents
Emergency Procedures
Emergencies may involve chemical spills, laboratory fires, medical conditions, or injuries. When emergencies occur at USC, a unified system is in place to handle them effectively, beginning with the Department of Public Safety (DPS). DPS will immediately coordinate with the proper internal/external agencies (EH&S, LAFD, LAPD, LA County HazMat) to respond and assist. See the EH&S Emergency Notification Fact Sheet for detailed procedures on what to do in an emergency situation.
Safety Training
USC EH&S provides various safety related classes, such as general lab safety, blood borne pathogens safety, radiation safety and X-ray diffraction safety. This link provides a list of essential training classes if you work in lab, along with information regarding class registration. ANY person working in a USC chemistry department lab must have taken at minimum the appropriate general lab safety class prior to beginning work.
Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)
Every experimental research group in the Department of Chemistry is required to maintain Standard Operating Procedures for potentially dangerous chemical or physical hazards or procedures in their laboratories. The SOPs should be emailed to the chair of the departmental safety committee and they will be put into a departmental electronic database.
