Outreach - Department of Chemistry

Department of Chemistry faculty are actively involved in a range of public engagement activities geared towards helping explain the relevance of our research to non-scientists and increasing the involvement of underrepresented groups in STEM.

Summer Experience in Renewable and Green Energy (SERGE)

SERGE is an immersive, four-day science camp for Native American middle school students that aims to spark interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education and careers. Camp participants attend middle schools in Southern California and are all members of the Torres Martinez Desert Cahuilla Indian tribe, which helps promote the camp and coordinate transportation.

Beach Cleanups

The Fieser Research Group organizes three beach cleanups of Hermosa Beach every year. In collaboration with Heal the Bay, they compile data on everything collected to be used for policy development. Research Internships

Since 2010, USC and Cerritos College have been teaming up to offer paid research internships to qualified Cerritos students. This 8-week, NSF-funded summer program introduces participants to energy- and sustainability-related laboratory research happening in the department.
