New study of Nepal’s catastrophic 2021 flood can inform disaster management

Earlier this fall, unusually heavy rains in Nepal led to deadly flooding and landslides in the country’s southern region, reminiscent of the catastrophic flood that occurred in the Melamchi Valley of Nepal in 2021.

Using satellite imagery and other sophisticated technology, a team of researchers led by Wrigley Institute faculty affiliate Josh West and Ph.D. student Chan-Mao Chen have investigated the Melamchi flood’s impact and developed insights that could help inform disaster prevention and infrastructure planning for regions like Nepal. The study also provides an analysis of the flood’s triggers and drastic impacts on the landscape.

Chen presented this research at the 2024 Wrigley Institute Annual Research Symposium and won 2nd place for his research poster.
