Summary Statement of Research Interests

I am fascinated by the way history and literature intertwine; how poems, novels, plays, and films express political and historical truths and questions; concepts of national identity and dissidence; Bakhtinian dialogism; and the role of the author/poet/artist as a historical witness. My interests include an exploration of how language shapes literary voice and the transformation of the written word into the spoken word within the performing arts. I am exhilarated by the weight of words, moral criticism through metaphor, dialogue with past and contemporary authors and philosophers, and poetry as a political act.
