We are deeply aware that the wildfires have affected many communities, especially vulnerable populations like the unhoused and other marginalized communities. We maintain ongoing partnerships with several nonprofit organizations, including The Midnight Mission and other groups dedicated to supporting communities who are often most severely affected by natural disasters. You can sign up to volunteer with those organizations via the sign-up link.
If you’re looking for one-off volunteer opportunities, we recommend exploring the resources provided by the Los Angeles Times list of volunteer opportunities related to wildfires. Additionally, we encourage you to start within your own community – helping neighbors and participating in local grassroots initiatives can create immediate, meaningful impact. These community-level efforts are often the most effective way to provide timely assistance.
Our partners from PATH have also asked us to share the following:
We are in urgent need of volunteer support to assist our LA Community Affairs team with receiving, organizing, and distributing these emergency supplies to our shelters and community members affected by the fires.
We are in-need of volunteer support at our PATH Metro Villas location (340 N Madison Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90004) all week (Monday 1/13-Friday 1/17).
If you are interested and/or able to help, please reach out to PATHVolunteers@epath.org to learn more. Thank you so much for your support of PATH during this difficult time. Please be well, take care of yourself and your community.

Our Assistant Executive Director Tina Koneazny is teaching an enriching class with a special focus on community engagement this spring.
In Tina Konaezny’s class, PHED 127 Principles of Traditional Yoga Through Community Outreach (2-Units), you will learn the practice of postures (asana), breathing techniques (pranayama), relaxation and meditation, which will also be incorporated with children’s literature in a children’s yoga class as a service-learning experience in neighborhood grade schools.

While most JEP student staff positions have been hired for the spring 2025 semester, there is still an opportunity to apply to work as a ReadersPLUS tutor (work-study required). The application deadline is January 24th, 5pm.
-
Please visit the JEP House and notify one of the staff members or send an email to jephouse@usc.edu. They can confirm whether or not your professor plans to participate.
-
We require 4 hours minimum for most JEP assignments; this is to give us flexibility to find two hours (more or less, depending on the assignment) that work for you AND for the JEP site.
If you are unable to meet the minimum required for submitting the application, please visit the JEP House and we should be able to help you.
-
Yes, you must attend training each semester and for each JEP assignment. Our procedures have changed over the last few semesters so attending training this semester is essential for all volunteers.
-
Yes, however, you must complete all requirements for any and all JEP assignments (re: service hours, reflective assignments, etc.). In general, we discourage students from over-extending themselves with multiple JEP assignments. This semester in particular, we cannot guarantee that we will be able to place all students who sign up, even for a single JEP assignment.

We are aware that participating in unpaid service-learning and community engagement activities may pose challenges for low-income students. Therefore, in 2022, with the help of generous donors, JEP established the Tammara Seabrook Anderson Spirit of Service Award, which aims to eliminate financial barriers to service and increase access to JEP’s volunteer programs. For more information on the Tammara Seabrook Anderson Spirit of Service Award, please email jephouse@usc.edu (Re: Spirit of Service) or Sable Manson at smanson@usc.edu
If you have work-study, you can also apply to our paid ReadersPlus program as a math and literacy tutor here: ReadersPLUS Applications (Deadline January 24th)
