Connecting Generations: JEP STEM’s 20th Anniversary and Alumni Reflections
JEP STEM Education Programs will celebrate 20 years in 2026, commemorating two decades of transformative science education for elementary students in Los Angeles, as well as the vital role its alumni play in STEM fields and communities worldwide. Since its founding, our STEM programs have engaged over 31,000 K-5 children and hundreds of college students, cultivating a new generation of scientists, educators, and innovators.
JEP STEM Alumni Stories: Alex Zambidis
As part of this milestone, JEP is reconnecting with alumni to spotlight how teaching science with JEP STEM shaped their paths in research, medicine, and education. From young scientists conducting experiments in their classrooms, to PhDs changing the world, JEP STEM alumni are living proof that great teachers and authentic learning can spark limitless possibilities.
One inspiring example is Alex Zambidis, who taught in the Young Scientists Program and now works as an intern at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle, WA, researching antibodies, and as a research associate at Altasciences, supporting preclinical drug development.
Alex traces his confidence and passion for science and teaching to his work with JEP STEM: “Working with DJ and Jess at JEP solidified my love for teaching science and inspired me to dive deeper into the field. I plan to pursue a PhD and aspire to be a college professor and employ the teaching principles I learned with JEP STEM.”
Alex continues sharing his excitement for science, including at a “science-themed” birthday party for his nephew (pictured above). He stated “As the party’s main entertainment, I held a mini-chemistry lesson where we made elephant toothpaste. Couldn’t have done without my teaching skills from JEP STEM!”
Over the course of the next year, JEP STEM will be hosting events to celebrate its 20th anniversary with vibrant community events. These gatherings will help newcomers to learn more about JEP STEM while providing alumni, partners, and students with opportunities to reconnect and honor the remarkable impact of our programs. We cannot wait to mark this milestone with you and the entire JEP STEM family. Please join us to celebrate the ripple effect that passionate JEP STEM educators spark when they ignite a love of science.
