Committing to JEPs Values in Unusual Times

BySusan Harris

As another academic year has drawn to a close, I find myself reflecting not only on our collective achievements at JEP but also on the broader context in which we operate. While we have much to celebrate after a productive and successful year, we cannot ignore the challenges unfolding in the world around us.  The urgency of our work is underscored by the current political and social climate, which places unprecedented pressure on educational institutions at every level. These challenges threaten not only the foundation of our society but also the well-being and very identities of those we serve.

At JEP, our response has been to clarify and strengthen our commitment to the values that define us—values that guide our work with community partners and shape the caring and inclusive environments we strive to create.

Our team of 60 student leaders and 11 professional staff recently engaged in an exercise, writing responses to the following question: “What does it look like when we are doing our best work?” We then analyzed our responses to identify the core values that inspire that “best work.”  Those insights are captured in the word cloud pictured above.

Of the nearly 100 values identified, the following were mentioned most frequently:

Collaboration

Community

Connection

Curiosity

Partnership

These values are not just aspirational; they are the foundation of our daily work. Collaboration and partnership center respect for diverse perspectives. Community and connection foster inclusion and a sense of belonging. Curiosity drives us to innovate and continually improve our programs. Together they create a culture of mutual support where everyone can thrive.

We have added these core principles to our website to communicate our values to external audiences and to serve as a touchpoint for our staff, reminding us of what is at the heart of our work.

In times of uncertainty, it is easy to become distracted by the “noise” or discouraged by daunting challenges. Our students remind me that our strength lies in our shared values and collective action. It gives me hope to know that the world’s future leaders are guided by principles that can build a more just and inclusive future for all.
