This project focuses on supporting conservation and knowledge of native species in California. The idea is to disseminate information, involve students, and promote the support of local flora and fauna. People in Los Angeles frequently know relatively little about the nature surrounding them, and it is hoped that the sharing of photos and information will spread interest in conservation.

Activities include:

– Taking students, USC employees, and others on hikes to various oak groves in LA County and around, teaching them about the importance of the native species.

– Helping with the identifying of animals and plants in the field, and reporting through the iNaturalist app, as well as working with experts in California. Data from the app are used by several conservation organizations.

– Encouraging the planting of native plant species, such as native oaks. This provides habitat, food, and a favorable environment for numerous other native species (e.g. rodents, woodpeckers, insects etc.).

• Encouraging the support of local conservation efforts, such as Save the Redwoods, Los Padres Forest Watch, Theodore Payne Foundation etc.
