Cross-Cutting Investigations of Comprehensive Issues
The biggest, most pressing environmental and sustainability issues of our time cut across every aspect of our lives, so they require a cross-cutting approach to solutions. Our major research initiatives fit that need, with multi-disciplinary, research-centered programs that also incorporate undergraduate education, internships, public events, and more.
Climate and Carbon Management
Seeded by a $4 million gift from Ballmer Group, this initiative enables innovative research, education, and engagement to accelerate decarbonization of our atmosphere and our economy. It includes original research that connects with the Wrigley Institute’s activities; Faculty Innovation Award grants to seed related research across USC; internships, seminars, and other educational opportunities to equip USC undergraduates for leadership in climate and carbon management; and annual events to engage the public on topics related to climate resilience, sustainability, and the social and economic dimensions of carbon and climate solutions.
Future of Plastics
The Future of Plastics initiative tackles one of our most pervasive and complicated environmental problems: plastics pollution. Focused on forward-thinking, interdisciplinary approaches, this initiative seeks ways to reduce and replace plastics in our everyday lives, and combines insights from chemistry and business to create better markets for upcycling and recycling. In addition to original research projects, Future of Plastics emphasizes collaboration with community stakeholders and policymakers, spearheaded by USC Sea Grant, to ensure that solutions keep society at their center.
Looking for Research Funding?
The Wrigley Institute offers funding to support USC faculty and graduate students pursuing innovative research along environmental and sustainability themes. Depending on the program, awards range from $5,000-$50,000 and are offered on one- and two-year cycles.
