Each academic year the Writing Program delivers approximately 400 sections of its courses, in which it serves almost 7000 USC students. These courses are highly rated by students, who consistently express appreciation for the opportunity to develop their writing, reading, and thinking skills in a challenging but supportive environment. Along with course offerings, the Writing Program facilitates occasions for USC students to publish and present their work through the journal Scribe and the Undergraduate Writers’ Conference.

Scribe

Scribe is an online, multidisciplinary journal created and written by USC students that attracts an international readership numbering in the thousands. Founded in 2002 (as AngeLingo), Scribe’s focus scales from the global to the personal, and its pieces include articles, illustrations, blog posts, songs, movies, photographs, poems, stories, and artworks. The Scribe team, which consists of writers, editors, a graphics designer, and a web designer, welcomes submissions throughout the year.

Transfer Student Soul Search

Welcome to the Transfer Student Soul Search! Whether you are new to USC (in which case, congratulations!) or have been on campus for a while, this site connects you to resources and opportunities to network and socialize with other transfer students. The self-discovery modules are designed to support YOU in finding community and learning about the benefits of being a member of the Trojan Family. The modules can be enjoyed in any order. You can go directly to the resources that resonate with you most. For instance, you might want support with a writing project today, but you won’t be applying for Academic Honors or Fellowships until next semester.

Inclusive Pedagogy Resource Library

Developing a 21st century approach to language in writing programs is vital to create equitable, collaborative, and expansive classroom experiences for students. Critical pedagogy can be the key in cultivating linguistic inclusion with the use of code-meshing, community learning models, and compassionate student-teacher engagement fostering excitement and hope within written expression. This Resource Library offers strategies to embrace and support Multilingual Learners (MLLs) by recognizing global & cultural forms of Englishes. The materials here favor context, challenge socio-linguistic hierarchies, and build awareness of biases to promote active engagement that encourages ownership, creativity, and authentic student voices.

Undergraduate Writers’ Conference

The Undergraduate Writers’ Conference is the culmination of a competition in USC student writing across genres (categories include analytical essays, researched essays, professional writing/moral reasoning, and creative works). This annual event is designed to let students share with peers outside the classroom and vie for cash prizes. In the mode of a traditional academic conference, complete with keynote speaker, undergraduates submit and present their work on faculty-moderated panels.
