Introducing the MS in Economics and Data Science (MECDS) at USC

The Dornsife Department of Economics is proud to announce the launch of the innovative Master of Science in Economics and Data Science (MECDS) program, a joint offering by USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences and the USC Viterbi School of Engineering. This STEM-designated program combines rigorous training in economics and data science to prepare graduates for impactful careers in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors.

 

Why MECDS?

The MECDS program is designed for aspiring data scientists who want to integrate the analytical power of economics with advanced data science skills. Students will learn to tackle large-scale datasets, apply modern empirical techniques, and conduct sophisticated economic analyses to solve real-world problems.

Program Highlights:

  • Curriculum: Eight courses (four in economics, four in data science).
  • Economics: Core courses in microeconomics, econometrics, and big data econometrics, with electives in financial economics, consulting, advanced econometrics, and macroeconomics, among others.
  • Data Science: Courses in programming, machine learning, data mining, and computational thinking, with electives in deep learning, visualization, and user experience, among others.
  • STEM Designation: International students on F-1 visas may qualify for a 24-month STEM OPT extension.

 

Admissions and Eligibility

Applications for Fall 2025 open on December 15, 2024, and close on April 15, 2025. Applicants should have:

  • One year of calculus, a statistics course, and introductory microeconomics and macroeconomics.  Intermediate economics courses preferred.
  • Programming experience not required.  Students are placed into an initial data science sequence based on programming experience.

USC undergraduates can also apply for the MECDS through the Progressive Degree Program (PDP), with a required GPA of 3.5 or higher.
