Our lab focuses on understanding the biophysical role of polymer-like proteins unequivocally linked to Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s disease. By applying concepts from polymer physics and chemistry, we hope to understand their physiological function and transition to the diseased dysfunction within the neuron.

We study the biochemical and genetic basis of hypermutation in bacteria using error-prone DNA polymerases and in humans using B-cell enzymes required for antibody affinity maturation. We are investigating the roles of pathogenic error-prone pols in generating antibiotic tolerance and resistance in bacterial pathogens, and we are making monoclonal antibodies in a test tube using purified B-cell enzymes and human tonsil and Llama immunoglobulin libraries.

Our group is interested in studying the mechanism and kinetics associated with initiated chemical vapor deposition (iCVD) of functional polymers onto structured materials and liquid surfaces. The iCVD process eliminates the need for organic solvents and thereby offers a safer and cleaner alternative to liquid phase polymer processing.
