About the Collection
Since Harry Hadigian launched the Happy Harry Armenian Radio Hour on LA’s 1460 AM in 1956, a vibrant tradition of Armenian radio programming has flourished throughout California, including in cities like Los Angeles, Fresno, and San Francisco. These broadcasts, a cornerstone of Armenian American cultural life, offer valuable insights into the experiences, challenges, and contributions of the Armenian community in California.
The Institute’s collection features recordings from the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, preserved on reel-to-reel tapes and audio cassettes, including notable programs such as the Armenian Radio Hour and the Sounds of Armenian Diaspora. Once digitized, these recordings will be accessible to researchers, providing a vital resource for those studying the history of Armenian media, diaspora identity, and community life. This archive not only preserves a rich cultural heritage but also serves as a testament to the enduring presence and influence of Armenians in California.
