Focused on Solutions, not Boundaries
Wrigley Institute research launchpads merge the expertise of core faculty, staff scientists, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students to generate data and intelligence aimed at solving the world’s most pressing environmental problems.
With a focus on research that breaks traditional disciplinary boundaries, our launchpads both help move the field of environmental studies upward and create unique training opportunities for tomorrow’s environmental and sustainability leaders.
Earth and Environmental Systems
Focused on the natural systems that combine to form our environment, the Earth and Environmental Systems launchpad supports projects that monitor and develop scientific insights about our changing planet. These projects draw on the latest research in fields such as marine biology, oceanography, microbiology, geology, and terrestrial ecology, to improve our understanding of the environmental changes that may imperil our future.
Current and past projects in this area include long-term monitoring of Southern California’s San Pedro Channel, preservation and restoration of coral reefs, studies of pollinator biodiversity, and more.
Applied Environmental Solutions
The Applied Environmental Solutions launchpad serves as the Wrigley Institute’s research and development hub for solving our world’s manifold and growing environmental challenges. We turn science into action by testing the feasibility of new ideas and determining how to convert them into workable practices and technology.
Current and past projects in this area include kelp aquaculture, methods for recycling stubborn plastics, ocean-based carbon sequestration, and more.
Social Transformation
Scientific insights and menus of solutions are of little value if people can’t understand or won’t deploy them. Drawing on methods and insights from the social and behavioral sciences, arts, and humanities, the Social Transformation launchpad supports projects that seek applied insights into how people think, what they believe, and how they ultimately behave.
Current and past projects in this area include wildfire management and education, interventions to reduce ocean microplastics, methods to counteract climate misinformation, and more.
Looking for Research Funding?
The Wrigley Institute offers funding to support USC faculty and graduate students pursuing innovative research along environmental and sustainability themes. Depending on the program, awards range from $5,000-$50,000 and are offered on one- and two-year cycles.
