One of the earliest and most graphic responses to the current Philippine drug war has been the work of photojournalists. How has the drug war, by instilling a bio-politics of fear, transformed their ways of seeing? Guest speaker Vicente L. Rafael, Giovanni and Anne Costigan Professor in History at the University of Washington, asks what becomes of justice amid images of injustice under a regime of fear?
About the speaker: Professor Vicente L. Rafael is trained in Southeast Asian history, European intellectual history and anthropology. Research interests include language and power, the politics of translation and literature, Comparative Colonialisms and nationalism, the social history of media and mediation, critical theory and anthropology, empire, race and gender.
