Our Team:

Fariborz Nasertorabi, PhD
Co-Director, Structural Biology Core
Email: nasertor@usc.edu
Fariborz received his MS in Molecular Biology in 1998 from Uppsala University, Sweden and later joined The Burnham Institute in San Diego, USA in 1999 to peruse his Ph.D. in biochemistry and X-ray crystallography under supervision of Professor Kathryn R. Ely.
He did two post-doctoral training at EMBL Heidelberg, Germany and Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, working with large multi-protein complexes, virus proteins and membrane proteins, before he moved back to California.
In 2015 he joined USC as the Director of Structure biology Core. Under leadership of Professor Reymond Stevens and Vadim Cherezov, he established the Structure Biology Core to provide services in molecular biology, biochemistry and structure biology to USC research laboratories and beyond.
He has more than two decades of hands-on experience working with proteins using wide range of available techniques in molecular biology, proteins biochemistry and structure biology with a focus in X-ray crystallography.

Gye Won Han, PhD
Co-Director, Structural Biology Core
E-mail: gyewon.han@usc.edu
Dr. Gye Won Han received her B.S. and M.S. in Chemistry from Ewha Womans University in Seoul, South Korea, and trained in Crystallography at the University of Pittsburgh, where she earned her Ph.D. in 1993.
She conducted postdoctoral research at UC San Diego and UCLA before joining The Scripps Research Institute, where she served as a Scientific Associate at the Joint Center for Structural Genomics (JCSG), working on high-throughput structure determination of soluble proteins, and later as a Staff Scientist in the GPCR Network, focusing on membrane protein structures. In 2015, she joined the Bridge Institute at the University of Southern California, where she has served as Co-Director of the Structural Biology Core (SBC) since 2019.
Dr. Han specializes in X-ray crystallography and cryo-electron microscopy, with a focus on the structure determination and refinement of membrane proteins. She has co-authored over 150 peer-reviewed publications and is named a Highly Cited Researcher by Clarivate Analytics. She is committed to advancing the SBC and ensuring it continues to serve as a valuable resource for the scientific community.
