New report on the situation of freedom of religion or belief in Uzbekistan released

Professor Steve Swerdlow recently published a report on the situation of freedom of religion or belief in Uzbekistan in his  volunteer capacity as Senior Advisor to UN Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Religion Ahmed Shaheed, who is the former Foreign Minister of the Maldives and now a professor of Human Rights at the University of Essex.

The 56-page report entitled “Promoting Freedom of Religion or Belief in Uzbekistan: Examining Five Years of Progress” evaluates reforms made by the Government of Uzbekistan in the sphere of freedom of religion or belief (FoRB). It specifically assesses the implementation of 12 recommendations that Ahmed Shaheed, the then UN Special Rapporteur on FoRB, offered in his 2018 country report on Uzbekistan, noting the significant strides made by Uzbekistan as well as remaining gaps.
