Devinez!

ByYiniu Chen

I was born a stubborn streak.

No eyes, no mouths, no ears—

I am just a middleman with no personality.

Curl me, straighten me, or evoke me,

Here, there, up and down.

I am the ultimate chameleon.

I could submit to anything.

When the water, or any other stringent liquid,

Pours on the venerable me,

Sometimes, I resist too.

It is more of an instinct coded in my nature.

I often dread waking up one morning,

To even feel the shape of eye-sockets.

To me, there is no suicide, only murder—

That makes me rise and grow, so cheekily,

Yet once again, and again.

Don’t sound surprised because I told you:

I was born a stubborn streak.
