Fractured

ByGarrett Goodrum

“As people, we play so many different roles. Our personae at work, during school, at home, or among friends can be unrecognizable from one another. However, many of the people we interact with only see us in one of these roles, so that single role is the only way they can perceive and think of us. But that raises the question of which role is real. What gives one role more validity than another? Is there a true self? The way I see it is that every one of our personas is an equally true part of ourselves. With this in mind, the self becomes a conglomerate, a mixture of our thoughts and the performances we put on.

This sculpture deconstructs this sense of self by asking what happens if an identity falls apart. The large figure represents the identity of an individual, but small figures spill out of the individual’s fractured body. These small figures are every role the individual plays.”
