In honor of our 2022 JEP Community Service Awards we’re featuring our winner of the 2022 Extraordinary Community Service – Jasmin Sanchez – today.

Jasmin’s story with JEP is one that goes years back – when Jasmin was in second grade, she first learned about JEP through our volunteers that taught science in her school. Later, through her participation in the Leslie and William McMorrow Neighborhood Academic Initiative, she met Susan Harris, USC’s Executive Director, and Dr. Dieuwertje Kast, who taught a STEM research methods class as part of the program. Jasmin shared with us that these experiences really encouraged her interest in the STEM fields from an early age.

Therefore, it is not surprising that Jasmin got actively involved with JEP herself as soon as she was able to. She explained: “By the time I accepted USC as my choice of university, I already had a job with the Joint Education Program in the STEM department. This job wasn’t just any typical job, it was an opportunity to go back into my community and open up possibilities for other children.”

Since her time as a freshman, Jasmin has worked in every single of our STEM Education programs – starting with the Young Scientists Program, then the Medical STEM Program, and now Wonderkids – and has also helped with different student and teacher workshops that JEP has hosted since then.

For her time after USC, Jasmin has a very special goal:
