IACS is pleased to announce that the theme of the 2024-2026 cohort of the Fr. James L. Heft SM Generations in Dialogue Program is “Medical Ethics: Transhumanism and the Body.

Transhumanism is an emerging reality that strives to transcend the physical limitations of the mind and body by technological means, including by integrating computer interfaces into the human brain or by editing the human genome. This raises a variety of profound ethical and philosophical questions that the cohort will explore.

The Generations in Dialogue Program creates a multi-generational community of scholars that allows participants, following the example set by the traditions of the Catholic Church, to explore how faith informs scholarship and scholarship informs faith.

As a flagship IACS program, Generations in Dialogue provides a cohort of early-career scholars with the opportunity to meet with, listen to and learn from one another and from some of the most experienced thought leaders in their fields. Senior mentors in turn pass on their accumulated wisdom and experience to new generations of scholars.

“Generations in Dialogue is really unique in helping overcome some of the fragmentation and specialization in the academy by bringing some of these people together,” said Andrew Lynn, Ph.D., a member of the IACS 2019-22 Sociology of Religion Cohort who is now a research scholar and postdoctoral fellow at the University of Virginia.

Generations in Dialogue welcomes scholars and artists from all disciplines and all faith traditions. Scholars or artists not connected with a faith tradition, but who desire to understand how their work connects with a religious tradition, are also welcome to apply.

The cohort will be led by Charles Camosy, Ph.D., professor of Medical Humanities at the Creighton University School of Medicine and holder of the Monsignor Curran Fellowship in Moral Theology at St. Joseph Seminary in New York.

Through Generations in Dialogue, IACS will advance and promote the scholarship and public profile of the participants, as well as elevate their ideas and voices in a world where thoughtful voices connecting faith and reason, spirituality and scholarship are increasingly needed.
