The ExL Award provides funding to USC Dornsife undergraduate students who wish to participate in experiential learning opportunities such as service-learning, professional conferences, or overseas studies.

If you are interested in funding for an approved Maymester, Julymester, or Problems without Passports course, or funding for research with a faculty mentor, please apply for SOAR for fall and/or spring semester funding or SURF for summer funding.

ExL awards are administered consistent with the University’s Notice of Non-Discrimination. Recipients are chosen without regard to race, color, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, or any other prohibited characteristic.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Yes, students are allowed to apply for multiple funding opportunities during the same period. However, you may only accept funding from one source for the same period. Also, students awarded the maximum amount of ExL award funding in the fall are not eligible to apply for additional funds in the spring.

You must disclose your intent to apply for other funding sources in your ExL application proposal. If you are offered and accept funding from another source before receiving  notification from ExL, you are required to inform our office immediately. Your application for ExL will automatically be closed if you accept funds from another source. Any offers from ExL are also voided if you accept funds from other sources.

Students who fail to disclose receiving multiple awards for their research or experiential learning opportunity will have their ExL award rescinded, and will become ineligible for SOAR/SURF/ExL funding in future terms.

  • No. EXL Awards are limited and intended to support experiential learning opportunities such as service-learning projects, professional conferences, or overseas study programs. Students participating in eligible Maymester programs should instead apply for SOAR funding.

  • Fall/Spring Award Recipients:

You can receive your SOAR award by direct deposit to a checking or savings account. Please note that if you have outstanding tuition, fees, or other items on your student account, the SOAR award will go toward paying those first. If your fee bill has been fully paid, you may access the award as a refund. To receive a refund, log in to USCe.pay and sign up for direct deposit (under My Account).

    Summer Award Recipients:

Please visit Direct Deposit Stipend Instructions for guidance. It is highly recommended that you sign up for direct deposit to avoid lost checks.

Be advised that your stipend may arrive as a check mailed to your local home address. Students should always keep all addresses (both current address and permanent address) updated in OASIS.
