Harry Strawson

I am a fifth-year PhD candidate originally from London and I have previously completed Classics degrees at UCL (MA) and Cambridge (BA). I am interested in the role played by the reception of Greco-Roman antiquity in the cultural history of modernity with a particular focus on Homer and the history of classical scholarship, the modernist reception of antiquity, and questions of temporality and translation. My dissertation, titled ‘Homer and the Philology of Modernity: Classical Philology, the Problem of Modernity, and Homeric Scholarship from Aristarchus to Adorno’, explores these questions through the lens of classical philology via an examination into the ways in which Homeric criticism is entwined with the intellectual and cultural dynamics of modernity.

 

In addition to my dissertation work, I have written about classics and other topics for publications including the London Review of Books and the Times Literary Supplement, where I am also a regular fiction critic.
