Dr. M. Michael Appleman, Emeriti Professor of Biological Sciences, has passed away (1933-2019). A native Angeleno, he received his Ph.D. from the University of Washington. He joined the Faculty at USC in 1976 as a Biochemist, doing research on cyclic AMP phosphodiesterase. Dr. Appleman served as Chair of Biology from 1984-86 and was known for having a strong working relationship with administrative staff. He later served as the Director of Instructional Programs at a time when the Department received a $1 million grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute to improve undergraduate education. He is survived by his wife Irma and children Miguel, Eric, and Alex Appleman.
