About Us

The Dornsife Undergraduate Programs office oversees General Education, Freshman Seminars, Dornsife Toolkit, the Interdisciplinary Major Program, and MDA courses.  In collaboration with The Writing Program and The Ahmanson Lab, the Dornsife Undergraduate Programs led the creation of the Together Apart: Freshman Colloquium to showcase students’ original papers or creative works during the COVID-19 pandemic.

General Education

The General Education Program complements the depth acquired in major and minor coursework by preparing students to be generally well educated adults, informed citizens of the twenty-first century and who understand its challenges.  All undergraduates are required to satisfy G.E. requirements.

Freshman Seminars

In the Freshman Seminar Program, students learn the excitement of intellectual inquiry by participating once a week for ten or eleven weeks in a two-hour seminar on a topic of personal interest.  These two-unit seminars are available to all freshmen at USC.

Dornsife Toolkit

The two-unit Dornsife Toolkit courses allow students to acquire specific intellectual skills that are valuable to employers and post-undergraduate programs.  Toolkit courses are available to all undergraduates at USC.

Interdisciplinary Major Program

The Interdisciplinary Major Program allows students to design individual programs of study that cross the lines between traditional majors.

MDA 250, Internship for Liberal Arts: Work and Career — Theory and Practice

In this internship course, students explore different understandings of work and career in American society while testing theories in an actual work setting.  MDA is available to all undergraduates.

MDA 325, Case Studies in Modern Leadership

In this two-unit special course, students study a single leader or small set of leaders, including the strengths and weaknesses that distinguish them and the cultural forces that nurture them.  MDA 325 is currently taught by Professor Steven Lamy and Gordon Brown, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
