Training the next generation of ocean scientists

The USC Graduate Program in Ocean Sciences is a nationally recognized interdisciplinary program training the next generation of ocean scientists.

The program includes faculty from the USC Department of Earth Sciences and the USC Department of Marine and Environmental Biology, and provides students with a curriculum designed to provide the skills necessary to become leaders in ocean sciences.

A unique aspect of the USC Ocean Sciences program is a focus on computational and quantitative skills. While observational, analytical, and descriptive methods will always play an important role in oceanographic sciences, we believe that the next generation of ocean scientists must be able to frame scientific questions in mathematical terms and to effectively handle large datasets. Students don’t necessarily need a strong background in mathematics or computer science to join the program, but will focus on developing these skills during the PhD.
