James Higganbotham

USC Distinguished Professor of Philosophy and Linguistics James Higginbotham, holder of the Linda Hilf Chair in Philosophy and renowned expert in generative grammar, linguistic semantics and the philosophy of language, has died. He was 72.

William E. Rutherford

It is with great sadness that the USC Linguistics Department announces the passing of Professor William E. Rutherford, a distinguished emeritus faculty member in USC’s Linguistics Department and, earlier, in the American Language Institute.

In Memoriam: Jean-Roger Vergnaud, 65. A linguistics professor in USC College, Vergnaud made major contributions to syntax and phonology. “His work was inspired by a penetrating vision of what the study of language should strive to become,” said Noam Chomsky, Vergnaud’s adviser at MIT.
