ITALIAN LANGUAGE PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of ITAL 220, students will be able to:
• Write spontaneous and presentational texts (e.g., blogs, emails, essays) of up to two pages on familiar topics that use a variety of tenses in connected sentences and some simple paragraphs;
• Provide simple descriptions and narrations, express opinions, and compare their opinions with those of others;
• Converse effectively about familiar topics (e.g., family, housing, food, daily routine) in a culturally appropriate manner;
• Create with language to talk about themselves and Italian cultural topics using connected sentences;
• Ask and answer straightforward questions about familiar and culturally relevant topics;
• Identify the main points of and summarize authentic texts (written, oral, visual, etc.) with some contextual support when necessary;
• Utilize regional and broader cultural knowledge to inform their communicative output;
• Identify and briefly describe societal issues and cultural phenomena of contemporary Italy;
• Make cross-cultural comparisons between everyday life in Italy and the United States (e.g., university life, food, family);
• Connect and interact with larger Italian-speaking communities online and in Los Angeles through programs and institutions such as the Italian Cultural Institute, the Italian History Museum, the JEP program at USC, or potential internship opportunities.
